Celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism at Corpus Christi Parish

Please call the Parish Office at 508-888-0209 to schedule your Baptism.  Parents wishing to have their child baptized at Corpus Christi Parish should be registered members of the parish.

The Sacrament of Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua) and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.  Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word."  CCC 1213

The Role of Godparents

To be chosen as a godparent is a special honor.  You, above all others, have been entrusted with the responsibility to participate in this child's life and Catholic education.  This privilege offers the godparent the opportunity to develop a mutually enriching spiritual relationship - one that will last throughout this life and beyond.  There are many ways godparents can nurture this spiritual relationship and become a special friend to your godchild.  You can:

Celebrate the anniversary of this holy day of Baptism each year with a visit, a call or a card.

As your godchild grows, listen to and share in the struggles and triumphs of living a Christian life, and keep yourself informed on Christian Doctrine and values, to be able to answer questions as they arrive.

Encourage a consistent life of faith through special cards, letters, or gifts to celebrate holy events…Christmas, Easter, and personal life events…such as graduation, first job, engagement.  (Gift suggestions include a bible, spiritual book, rosary, religious jewelry, or retreat opportunity.)

Participate in, or send assurance of prayer, as your godchild receives the other sacraments, particularly First Communion and Confirmation, which complete the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church Community.

Be supportive of your godchild’s parents in their role as primary religious educators of their child.

Most importantly, become a model of Christian, living for your godchild, through daily prayer, virtue, and active participation in parish life and liturgy.

By living a Christian life in partnership with your godchild, both of you will experience the great joy of sharing a life of faith.

Choosing a qualified godparent

Godparents need to be at least 16 years of age, confirmed and if married, married according to the laws of the Catholic Church.

Parents can also choose one Catholic sponsor for Baptism and one "Christian Witness."  A Christian Witness is someone who has been baptized into another Christian denomination.  This person is still considered to be a godparent, but would appear on the Baptism Certificate as a Christian Witness.
