EASTER SEASON

THE SEASON OF THE ALLELUIA:

The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated as one feast day, sometimes called the Great Sunday. The singing of the alleluia is characteristic of these days (General Norms for the Liturgical Year #22).

Following Church law, the large Easter candle (also know as paschal candle) remains in the sanctuary through Pentecost Sunday. Thus, the permanent stand by the font will remain empty until that date.

The 12 wall candles, marking the places where the walls were anointed at the dedication of the church, will be lit on all Sundays of this season and on the Ascension holy day.

These are also the days to praise God for the sacraments that initiate us into the risen Lord:

We praise God for those baptized at the Easter Vigil and for those received into the full communion of the Catholic Church – in our diocese and throughout our Church.

Through the season, we continue to welcome infants into the Body of Christ.

We celebrate the First Communion of our children on May 3.

We celebrate the Confirmation of our youth on April 11.

THE WEEKDAYS OF THIS WEEK: EASTER OCTAVE:

The first eight days of Easter are feasts of the highest joy. If you came to weekday Mass for Lent, why not continue this week, adding a time of joy to the time of penance?

THIS FRIDAYS GOSPEL: is from John 21, the appearance of Jesus shown in our stained glass windows above the statue of Mary, Seat of Wisdom.

SUNDAYS OF THE SEASON:

The Introductory Rites will include a blessing and sprinkling of water, a reminder of our baptism into the death and resurrection of the Lord.

While the first reading each Easter season is from the Acts of the Apostles, the second reading in year A is from 1 Peter. This book was selected for this season based on its harmony with the seasons joyous faith and sure hope.

The gospel passages are arranged this way each year: post -resurrection appearances of the Lord (to Thomas on Sunday 2, another episode on Sunday 3); the proclamation of the Good Shepherd (Sunday 4); portions of Jesus discourse at the Last Supper (Sundays 5, 6, 7).

LATER THIS YEAR: PLEASE MARK THESE DATES:

CATHOLIC MORALITY

THE CHURCH AND HUMAN SERVICES: An important meeting of the Capes faith community will be Wednesday, April 9th, 10:00am - 1:00pm, in the Skylight Room of the Parish Center. This is a follow-up to the ingathering of October 2007, where concerned church members considered the county governments role in human service programs (for this fiscal year, severe cuts were made). At that meeting, an action plan was approved – to visit the governor, to press county officials to fund a human services department and programs, etc.

Now, all faith communities on the Cape are being encouraged to regather – clergy, lay leaders, leaders of faith-based human service programs. If you would like to be included in this parishs group, please contact one of the leaders of the St. Vincent de Paul society or parishioner Tom Ryan (gthomasryan@verizon.net)

THE CHURCH AND IMMIGRATION

Our dioceses Catholic Social Services is sponsoring a program for human services providers to be ready to assist immigrants and their loved ones in the case of a raid or detention. It will be at Federated Church, Main St. Hyannis, 3/25, 2:30pm For more info, contact parishioner Tom Ryan (gthomasryan@verizon.net)
